The Director

THE PRINCE OF OLD HAVANA — DIRECTOR’S VISION

Migdia ChineaAs a director/writer, I have a feel for how a scene should play and try to strike the right communication balance between myself and the actors. When you understand the story, you have an entree into complex characters. My short film “anonymous (street meat)” is a sci-fi short in which banks have taken over and removed people’s identity. It deals with urban oppression and revenge. On “Kninth Floor” I’ve taken that concept a step further and in both films I juxtapose disturbing images with serene ones to provoke a strong gut reaction, which is what I aim to do.

Although I’ve worked as a television writer for many years, I don’t come into making films from a conventional background. As the daughter of Cuban exiles, I was raised in many different places throughout the US—but wherever I was, my reading and entertainment was classic literature and European films. I have, thus, become fascinated with the philosophy of color and form as a catalyst for action; of light and dark, good vs. evil—and of the struggle between upper classes and the dispossessed. As a director, that is my focal point. “The Prince of Old Havana” is inspired by the true story of Alberto Yarini, a famous Cuban politician whose untimely death elevated him to mythic status. I’m passionate about this man and present his story within the dark, mysterious and forbidding world of a city in transition.

Despite my Über low budgets, directing my shorts has provided me with some of the best times of my life. I am in my element creating a mood and making a personal connection with my written material. I can fill experiences with beautiful images, drama and irony. And I care about every aspect of my film, because I like the stories I make. More importantly, it’s for me an honor to do this.
